Indications That Your Electrical Panel is in Trouble

electrical-panel-technicianThe electrical panel is a key part of keeping your home’s power systems running smoothly and safely. Nobody likes to trudge out to the garage to replace a fuse, or reset a breaker. But, that’s a lot better than alternatives like electrocution or house fires. You should keep an eye out for signs that your electrical panel is dealing with some kind of problem. A malfunctioning electrical panel can make things quite a bit more dangerous for your electrical system. The sooner you recognize a malfunction, and have it repaired, the better off you’ll be. Some of the common indications that your panel is having a problem are listed below.

Constant Tripping

Typically, the most interaction a homeowner has with their electrical panel is to reset it after it breaks a circuit. This could involve replacing a fuse, or just resetting a switch to complete the circuit again. Typically, a circuit breaker activates because the circuit is overloaded. Unplugging a few things before resetting the circuit should solve the problem. However, if the panel keeps tripping the same circuit after being reset, you might have a bigger problem. That could mean that there is an issue with the circuit breaker, or with the circuit itself. Either way, you need to make sure that you have an electrician examine it as quickly as possible.

Smoking or Burning Smell

This should be an obvious one, but there are a few things that you should still know. If smoke is coming out of your electrical panel, or you smell something burning, DO NOT TOUCH THE PANEL! Call an electrician as soon as possible, so that they can take care of it for you. This could signify an extremely dangerous problem, one that you should have taken care of as quickly as possible.

Failure to Reset

Similar to the constant tripping issue, you should call an electrician if your panel doesn’t seem to want to reset at all. There could be a number of different causes for this kind of failure, none of which should go unaddressed. Make sure that you have a professional check it out as soon as you can.

Not Tripping at All

The entire purpose of an electrical panel is to break an electrical circuit when the current moving through it is too strong. A circuit that has too much power moving though it is more likely to have serious issues, like wires melting, that might start fires or cause injuries. Listen for a buzzing sound coming from your electrical panel, as that can indicate that there is too much power flowing through the circuit. A panel that can’t actually break a circuit when necessary is more of a hindrance than a help, so have it checked out as soon as you suspect that it’s having this problem.
