Top 3 Reasons You Should Replace Your Knob and Tube Wiring

Before the mid-20th century, builders and electricians used ceramic knobs and tubes to insulate and guide the electrical wiring in residential homes. The ceramic tubes run through the studs and joints in your home’s frame, providing a layer of protection between hot wires and flammable wood.

While every older home doesn't necessarily need knob and tube wire replacement, here are a few reasons to consider it.

1. You Don’t Have a Ground Wire

In the past, building codes didn’t require electrical systems to use ground wires. While today’s regulations are different, older homes aren't obligated to undergo upgrades to comply with newer building codes. What does this mean for you? It means you can’t use any device that has a third prong.

More importantly, it means you don’t have any protection against electrical shorts or ground faults. The ground wire works as a backup for the neutral (black) wire in your electrical outlets. If the neutral wire becomes compromised, a ground wire takes over to regulate electrical flow. This can save you from suffering an electrical shock.

2. You Probably Have Wear and Tear Deterioration

The condition of your electrical system might increase the need for a knob and tube wire replacement. While this system is durable, it will break down over time. The wires will become brittle, and the risk of a short will increase.

If you frequently blow fuses or trip your breakers, updating to a system that can handle today’s energy requirements might solve your problem.

3. Your Wiring Lacks Moisture Protection

Older wiring faces a greater risk of moisture exposure. Even a small amount of moisture can cause a short in an exposed circuit. This can lead to electrocution, house fires, and power outages.

Modern wiring has better insulation, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-moisture areas. Upgrade your home’s entire system for the best protection.
