Electrical panels are often ignored in households until they cause trouble. Everyone reading this blog right now probably has a story of trudging over to the circuit breaker in the middle of the night to get the lights back on after some electrical issues.

While the electrical panel can last for many, many years without developing serious problems, it has been known to happen. In the interest of keeping you safe during the year, we’ve compiled some good tips on how to keep your electrical panel in good condition.

Schedule Electrical Maintenance

It’s pretty much an all-around good idea to have a professional electrician go over your system for you at least once a year. Electrical systems are a vital part of the average home, and they can develop some very serious issues that have ripple effects across the whole house. During a preventive maintenance appointment, your electrician will be sure to check your circuit breaker and make sure that everything is functioning the way it should be. Trust us when we say that you don’t want to have a problem with your electrical panel go unnoticed for any length of time, when you can avoid it. The panel is one of the biggest safeguards for your electrical system, and if it malfunctions it can cause some serious problems.

Check it Yourself

You may not be an expert electrician, but you are qualified to at least take a look at the panel every now and again to make sure that everything is in the right position. It’s a good idea to check inside your electrical panel every once in a while, making sure that all the switches are properly set to the “on” position and that nothing else looks out of the ordinary. If a circuit has tripped, try resetting it to see if it stays on. If a circuit won’t reset or seems stuck somewhere in-between the off/on position, it’s a good idea to call a professional electrician to have a look at it for you. Please do not approach your electrical panel if it’s giving off a burning smell or smoking! In those cases, you should call for emergency electrical services as soon as possible.

Upgrade to a New One

If your electrical panel looks like it might be older than you are, it’s a good idea to consult with a professional about upgrading it. This is a safety issue, of course, but it’s also an efficiency issue. Older electrical panels can create bottlenecks for the current running through them. Switching to a more modern panel might be just what the system needs to start running in a much more efficient manner. If it’s been a while since your electrical panel has been upgraded, let us take care of it for you.
