There are some systems that you can probably afford to do without if they malfunction. Generators are not one of those things. Your generator is an emergency system. If it malfunctions when you need it, your situation could end up getting quite a bit worse than merely being inconvenient.

The best way to prevent your generator from completely breaking down on you when you need it the most is to schedule preventive maintenance for it at least once a year. This will give your technician the opportunity to make sure that any issues are dealt with before they can get worse. You should make sure to keep watch for any signs that your generator is developing problems between appointments, though. The faster you can recognize an issue and have it fixed, the better off your generator will be. Have a look at the following signs that your generator is in need of repairs.

Spotty Power Generation

A whole-house backup generator should be more than powerful enough to keep everything in your home running until the main power comes back on. At least, it should be if it was sized and installed properly. If your generator suddenly starts to experience stuttering or any other kind of lapse in power generation, you should have a professional check it out sooner rather than later. That kind of issue could be due to a short circuit, or some sort of problem with the natural gas line. You’ll need to have a technician check out the system to make sure.

Difficulty Starting

If your generator doesn’t start when it’s supposed to, it might be for a number of different reasons. It’s possible that the system isn’t getting the fuel it needs from the natural gas line. If you’re using a generator that runs off of gasoline or some other refillable fuel, you should check to make sure that it’s properly supplied. Gasoline, in particular, can actually go stale and lose its ability to combust, so if you’ve had the same gasoline in your generator for a while you might want to switch it out and see if that solves the problem.

Sudden Shutdowns

If your generator suddenly shuts off in the middle of powering your home, there could be a number of different things wrong with it. The battery might be dead, or it may have overheated due to low coolant. It’s also possible that the system needs one of a number of different parts replaced due to wear and tear, like the belts or the block heater. You’re going to need to have a technician check out the generator for you to tell for certain. The faster you call for repair in situations like these, the better.
