You may not think about your generator that often from day to day. After all, you’re only going to be using it a handful of times at most throughout the year. Still, when you do need your generator to work, you really need it. You don’t want to find out that your generator isn’t working properly in the middle of a blackout. So, have a look at the following signs that your generator needs repairs.

Low Power Flow

It’s always a good idea to test your generator a few times a year, just to make sure that it’s operating properly. If you have a whole-house generator, this might mean scheduling professional preventive maintenance for it. If you have a portable generator, it’s something that you can do yourself. Turn the generator on, and run it for a little while to make sure that everything is running smoothly. If the system seems to be having trouble supplying as much power as it normally does, then it’s a sign that you should probably have a professional take a look at it as quickly as possible.

Failure to Start

Again, this is one of those things that you really don’t want to be blindsided with when the power goes out. Failure to start could mean any number of things. If you have a portable generator, and you haven’t been cycling out the fuel in it, it’s possible that the gas inside has just gone bad (yes, that can actually happen!) Bad fuel is more than just useless for starting the generator, it also gums up the inner mechanism of the machine.

This can make the generator difficult to start, even if you replace the old fuel. If you have an automatic whole-house generator, it could mean that you have a problem with the gas line or the electrical system. It could also mean that you have a dead battery, which will need to be replaced. If your generator fails to start after multiple attempts, you should call for repairs as soon as possible.

Constant Starting and Stopping

If your generator does successfully start, but can’t seem to stay operating for more than a couple of minutes. Again, this could be caused by any number of things, including some factors we’ve already discussed. Low fuel, bad fuel, blocked lines, a failing battery, electrical issues, and the like can all cause inconsistent generator performance.

It’s also possible that your generator is actually overheating, and shutting down as a safety measure once the temperature surpasses the established safety threshold. This might mean that your system has a coolant problem, caused by a leak or some other issue. You’ll need to have a professional examine your system to know for certain.
